4 ways to declutter paperwork

4 ways to declutter paperwork

There are always other things that seem more important than managing paperwork clutter, but when you take some time to declutter it always feels better!

I think this is especially true when it comes to paper.

All kinds of paper - important paper, junk paper, old paper - all the paper.

Whether your office is a separate room or just a corner in the kitchen or a dining room table, paper can be a major problem.

It has a way of piling up and it takes a lot of time to go through.

There’s nothing like disorganized paper to make you feel, well, disorganized.

When you let paper pile up it becomes hard to concentrate on what you’re working on, you can’t find what you’re looking for, you are less productive and everything takes longer.

You need a functional and accessible place for paper or it just gets moved from place to place, pile to pile.

Like all organizing, the process of organizing paper is about decision making, but paradoxically, even though a single piece of paper is a small thing compared to other types of clutter it can represent multiple steps of action depending on what it is.

So let’s get down to how to go through the paper in your life.

When you decide what to keep and what to toss, ask yourself these questions:

1. Do you actually need this piece of paper or receipt? What specific purpose does it have?

2. How old is it? If it’s old it’s probably no longer necessary. If it is important then label it and file it.

3. Can it be found on the internet? Now we can access so much information online that used to be only paper. Definitely take advantage of this!

4. What’s the consequence of not having it if you do need it? Sometimes we hang on to things for fear of needing something in the future. It can feel like security or like holding on to other kinds of objects it represents a period in your life that was significant. If so then file it or scan it.

If you find that you need help please contact me. I can help you declutter and organize your paper problems!

How to get rid of clutter once and for all

Clutter drains your energy. You know it’s there, you’re thinking you should do something about it. It weights on your mind.

Yet you don’t have the motivation to actually do anything about it.

It’s not a good feeling having to work around clutter to do things you want or need to do.

Little by little clutter creeps up on you. Sometimes you can get it to the point where you can tidy up, but it never really goes away.

What is the solution? How can you get rid of clutter once and for all?

The number one thing that needs to happen is that you need be motivated to do something about it. It starts there.

But it’s hard to get motivated when you don’t know how to start.

It’s a mindset thing. Set aside the feelings of overwhelm, sadness and anger for a moment. Take a deep breath. Set timer for 15 minutes and just start moving things around.

Start with the easy things.

Some things don’t belong where they are and so put them where they belong.

Other things you can simply get rid of.

For everything else just put them aside for the moment.

Even if it feels like you’re not making progress, you are, just by doing these things.

Really, that’s how to get started. It’s simple when you break it down to a small area and a short period of time.

You might even find yourself getting into it as you see the results.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

Decluttering Kitchens

As the saying goes the kitchen is the heart of the home.

You want to be able to prepare meals quickly and enjoyably. Having too much clutter on the counters interferes with making meals easily.

The first thing to do is remove anything that isn’t kitchen related. I know this can be hard when space is limited but you need to separate out what really needs to be there from what doesn’t.

Pots and pans all thrown in the cabinets? You can’t find the right one even though you know it’s there somewhere? So frustrating! Having the equipment you need when you need it is important.

Do you have dishes, glasses and mugs that you never use but haven’t ever taken the time to sort through them? This can be an easy fix that can be accomplished in less time than you think.

Are your counters filled with gadgets that take up space? There ARE ways to arrange them better. Or maybe find other places to store the ones you don’t use too often. Or let go of some that you don’t use at all.

In other words re-organize in a way that makes sense for how you really use the kitchen.

The way you declutter any one of these areas is to take everything out to actually see what you have. Let go of the things you don’t use. Sometimes there will be things you haven’t seen in years! Then when you put things back you’ll have more space and you can put the things you do use most often in a more accessible place.

When your counters and cupboards are cleared it will go a long way to feeling less cluttered.

As always if you want help feel free to contact me. I’m happy to help you.

Spring Organizing

Spring Decluttering, Cleaning and Organizing

Happy Spring! It’s that time of year again!

You’re getting the urge to do some Spring Cleaning but you look around your home and get overwhelmed by the cutter.

It’s normal after a long winter.

What to do?

The best thing to do is declutter the area you want to clean first.

Yes, that’s right.

It’s because you can’t clean around clutter, you have to clear the clutter first.

So move everything out of the corners (you know, those ones that collect all. the. things.), also the stuff under and around the furniture and anything else that’s in the way and in need of a good cleaning.

For everything you want to keep, put it away where it belongs, if possible.

This is the tidying up part.

If some things don’t have a place, set them aside to find a place for them later.

Let go of the things that you don’t want or need. Some things might have just ended up there for no good reason :)

Now you can start to clean. This might be a multi day project but you have the end result in mind, one that will feel great once it’s done.

Congratulations! You’re on your way to a real Spring Cleaning!

Winter In Maine

WINTER IN MAINE 1.jpg

Ah, Winter in Maine. Time for messy entry ways and mudrooms filled with boots, shoes, coats, scarves, hats and gloves. If you have kids double and triple that and it really adds up.

It’s not easy to be organized with all that extra stuff hanging around, but there’s something you can do to help maintain some order.

Set a kitchen timer for 30 minutes to go through as many of the boots, shoes, coats, scarves, hats as you can in that time. Make sure that you’re really using everything that’s there. That means getting rid of things that don’t fit anymore, things that are old and worn, mittens with out mates, etc. If you’re inspired to do more, great, if not come back another day for another 30 minutes.

For things you’re undecided about or you still want to keep that you’re not currently using put them in another room in a box or closet just for now. The idea is to ONLY have the things you’re currently using in the entryway or mudroom.

Yes, things will get messy again. But taking time now to de-clutter will keep everything from getting TOTALLY out of hand. We’re not aiming for perfection here, just trying to ward off chaos.

Let me know how it goes!

The truth about being organized

TRUTHABOUTORGANIZING4.jpg

Some people think that being organized means being uptight and rigid.

They don’t care about the clutter in their house and they even insist they like it that way.

But here’s the truth about organizing.

Being organized gives you freedom! When you can find WHAT you need WHEN you need it. You have more freedom to do the things you’d rather be doing. That’s the opposite of being uptight.

When you’re organized you have time to pursue other things in your life that matter - like time with your family, creative endeavors, even being able to relax more.

That’s freedom. Freedom from wasting time, and effort and stress of  dealing with your stuff.

Taking some time now to declutter, organize and tidy up now with give you the freedom to enjoy your home and have more time to do the things you’d rather be doing. Sounds good right?

If you feel like you don’t have the time or energy but would like to get organized and have more freedom, let me know. I can help you make it happen.  It will totally be worth it, I promise.

Do you ever get the urge to declutter, organize and clean your home?

Do you ever get the urge to declutter, organize and clean your house?

“What does it mean when you feel a strong urge to declutter, organize and clean your house?”

And here are some answers people gave ———

“It’s all about releasing. Getting ready to move forward, shifting the energy and creating space for new things to come. Feels great!”

“I’m feeling this way and do at the beginning of every year. I love it! It’s so awesome to let go of things the weigh me down.”

“It means you’re ready to let go of the old and make room for the new.”

“I always do a major decluttering when I want to clear my mind for new things.”

“Letting go of what no longer serves you makes room for what is coming on both a physical and mental level.”

“Purging your personal space is a sign that you are ready to let go and free up space to allow something better to come into your life.”

“Clutter is the physical manifestation of ‘stuck’ energy. And it feels awful! That’s why it feels so much better when you have a tidy house because the energy can flow!”

3 Organizing tips to start the New Year

3 TIPS 2.jpg

3 Tips to Get Organized in 2020

Happy New Year!  What a great time to get started on organizing projects, especially in Maine when you’re indoors more often.

Is there an area in your home that you’ve been wanting to organize?

Why not use the tradition of New Years resolutions to take some action to declutter and organize your home.

#1 PUT AWAY HOLIDAY STUFF

Do you procrastinate taking down your holiday decorations or find it sad when the holidays are over?

If so just remember the longer you keep up even wonderful decorations they can become visual clutter and lose their joy.

And holiday decorations can take up a lot of storage space, so you’ll want to make sure to only keep the ones that you really love.

If there are decorations that were never used ask yourself if it’s really worth keeping them. It might be time to let go.

#2 DECLUTTER ONE SMALL AREA AT A TIME

To start you’ll want to declutter in a way that doesn’t feel overwhelming. You can do this by decluttering and organizing one small area at a time.

What’s one or two small things you can do to that will help you improve the way you feel about your home? That will change the way you think about getting tidy, decluttering and organizing?

What comes to mind first as something you would really like to see change in your life? Do that!

If you want to get organized, start with one small area. Clear off a surface. Declutter a corner of your room if things have accumulated there.  Start with the easiest thing. Start with the thing that’s bugging you the most.

#3  CHANGE YOUR HABITS TO KEEP UP WITH ORGANIZING AND DECLUTTERING

Again start small. Doing one small thing consistently everyday or every week will allow you to integrate good habits that will help you get and stay organized.

For instance - Put away the mail and other incoming paper. If you don’t already have a place for this then create a temporary one, just so that all the paper goes in one place instead of everywhere.

Try to spend some time everyday making sure the dishes are washed and the kitchen counter is cleared off so you don’t feel behind when you wake up in the morning.

These are only two examples of habits that you can incorporate but you get the idea. It’s things like these that will help you feel less stressed out and more organized.

Integrating new habits takes time. Lasting change doesn’t happen overnight and unrealistic expectations can lead to feelings of failure.

Especially if getting organized is one of your New Year’s resolutions you’ll want to be kind to yourself and know decluttering and organizing needs to become a habit as well as a project.

The more actions you take the more you’ll see results.

Wishing you a happy, healthy and clutter free New Year!
